Perry Y. Chin Architect

The award winning East Building was designed by I.M. Pei and Partners, opened to the public in June 1978.

In 2008, as the time for renovation drew near, Gallery officials consulted Mr. I.M. Pei on interior architectural changes required by updated fire and life-safety codes. Pei recommended his longtime associate, Perry Y. Chin, who prepared a concept design to improve exiting, in addition adding exhibition spaces by focusing on underutilized attic spaces above the glass lay-light ceilings, creating two new Tower galleries connected by a roof top sculpture terrace overlooking Pennsylvania Avenue, improving circulations with new; stairs, elevator, and building service.

Hartman-Cox Architects was retained by the Gallery to develop the design and see it through construction.

The Miho Institute of Aesthetics campus nestled on ten hectare of verdant mountainous terrain in Shigaraki (near Kyoto), Japan

A holistic school of living; incorporates natural agriculture, beauty, and aesthetics, in addition to a rigorous academic curriculum. The Chapel is symbolically, architecturally and spiritually the school’s focus. The Chapel is deceivingly made simple by its warped surface; clad in stainless steel and dressed in red cedar within. Filtered lights from the tear drop skylight and entrance glass wall breathe life, inspiration and provide a setting for contemplation.

Chapel: 12,055 sq.ft. (1120 sq.m), seats 240 people

New York, NY. Located on a prime midtown site in the Fifth Avenue district, within walking distance to shops, boutique hotels, as well as corporate headquarters and central park.

The luxury residential development’s principle south-facing elevation is distinguished by dramatic stepped profile, composed of five double height large windows, succession of shallow balconies and deep terraces offering spectacular views. Clad in French limestone from Burgundy, resting on a base of gray granite from Virginia.

The Science Center is located on the south east side of Macau’s peninsula, alongside the confluence of the Zhujiang River Estuary and South China Sea.

The Science Center is a state of-the-art educational and cultural facility. The building’s playful volumes articulate the functional program within; consisting of a rhomboid, a dome and a tilted cone, all clad in anodized aluminum parading its presence at the edge of the waterfront like an ocean liner. The circulation is organized around clear pathways with choices intended to orient and enliven the experience of scientific discovery.

Mr. Pei physically isolated the Museum on its own manmade island adjacent to the south shore of the Corniche in Doha, Qatar.

True to the original vision of the Emir and his wife Sheikha Moza who saw it as a center of culture and education in Doha, the Museum has a spectacular view across the bay to the forest of towers that form the new Doha. Approachable from a bridge flanked by formal allee’ of tall palm trees with a cascade running through the middle from the fountain plaza in front of the building. It is the first significant museums in the Muslim world that focuses on the art of Islam. The museum’s geometric angular forms are contrasted between light and shadow from the dessert light. The limestone cladding come to life, its colors changes throughout the day, Mr. Pei distilled that “Light is the essence” and common thread of Islamic Architecture. He brings forth what are essential details; a covered arcade, fountains and water works, arched doorways and windows. Monumental round chandelier suspended below the Atrium’s dome, similar to the great perforated metal lighting fixtures in many mosques, which make the reference to Islam all but explicit.

The Museum is located in the northeast section of the historic quarter of Suzhou, China. It adjoins the 19th-century, landmark Zhong Wang Fu, and the 16th-century Garden of the Humble Administrator, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Mr. I.M. Pei was inspired to design a building that blends with the old city and yet at the same time shows we are in the twenty-first century,  where the essence of traditional building and landscape design can be distilled, reinterpreted, reformulated and synthesized into new directions for the future of Chinese architecture and gardens. The design takes its cues from the rich vocabulary of Suzhou's intricate gardens, traditional construction of whitewashed plaster walls, dark grey clay tile roofs.

Site area: 107,000 sq.ft. (10,000 sq. m), Gross fl. Area: 183,000 sq.ft. (17,000 sq. m), Exhibition space 53,800 sq.ft (5,000 sq. m)

Public amenities 32,291 sq. ft. (3,000 sq. m): auditorium, multipurpose hall, museum shop, tea rooms, offices research library and a study center.

The New Chancery Building is located within the International Place, northwest quadrant of Washington, D.C.

Its design; cues from the immediate context of the International Center, a desire to blend with the scale of the neighboring buildings, traditional Chinese architectural planning principles of gardens / outdoor spaces, spatial sequences, programmatic/functional requirements. Clad in honey colored French limestone(s) to better reflect the warmth of Washington, DC sun light.

Area: 345,500 sq. ft (32,100 sq. meters)

Major components includes: great hall, banquet hall, reception halls, auditorium, conference rooms, offices 10,760 sq. meters and landscaped gardens.

Four Seasons Hotel has great location, quality and service in addition to its grand, dignified and luxurious architecture. When Ty Warner purchased the building, Mr. I.M. Pei advised him on a Multi-phased refurbishment program; to the top of the building’s enclosure, adding balconies, double height windows and luxurious transformation of the presidential and penthouse suites.

Located in wooded parkland/farmland estate, just outside the historic "Listed Gardens" to Oare House, Wiltshire, England. 

Oare House is a “tea house” implicitly related to the traditions of English garden and the observation of nature, the pavilion is for; retreat, viewing landscape, entertaining, and receiving guests. The sweeping roof is made of glass, light steel frame and wood sunscreen, all supported on Architectural concrete podium.

Berlin, Germany Located in historic district of Mitte, Museuminsel (Museum Island). In proximity to Schinkel’s NeoClassical Neue Wache (New Guardhouse)

With reunification in 1990, the Deutsches Historisches Museum became the museum for the history of all parts of Germany. An extension to Germany’s National Historical Museum, and the Zeughaus would better meet the needs of the Historical Musuem (Old Arsenal, Restored by Karl Friedrich Schinkel in 1831, the oldest Baroque structure in the city on the legendary Unter den Linden boulevard). Mr. Pei’s designed a modern work of glass/transparent, not to clash with the Neo Classic style, yet are respectful of the past (Schinkel). A language of light and harmony that contrasts with the weight of the Zeughaus’s masonry. Connected via a passageway to the German Historical Museum.

Beijing, China The new Bank of China Head Office stands at the intersection of two of the most important thoroughfares in China’s capital city; Xidan Street, a north-south shopping spine, and Changanjie, the city’s main east-west axis, which leads directly to Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City.

The building consists of two L-shaped components that enclose a skylight central court. The offices look down into the court of landscaped garden, banking hall, and provides a tranquil entrance, place for meeting and banking

Area: 1.8 million sq. ft. (168,000 sq. meters); corporate and tenant offices, board room & reception hall. Below grade: cafeteria, auditorium, vaults, parking. Clad in Roman travertine, large windows, Window wall and skylight.

The Miho Museum nestled on luxuriant natural setting, hilly terrain of Shigaraki (near Kyoto), Japan

Developed with the Client, the shape of the structure was naturally informed by the topography of the site (85% of the Museum is underground), by prefectural regulations, and Mr. I.M. Pei desired to connect the essence of Japanese architecture with modern construction. The journey to the museum site begins at the reception pavilion, via a 656 ft. (200 meter) tunnel through the mountain, a 394 ft. (120 meter) suspension bridge spanning a deep valley, to get to the site without destroying the natural environment and designing surprise in the approach to the museum. In the spirit of the site, the place and the historical roots (landscape) the patch to the museum recalls traditional Japanese garden and temple design. Evident by a series of sloping glass roofs rising above the undulating mountain slopes.

The Musée d’Art Moderne Grand-Duc Jean was built on the rampart walls of the old Fort Thüngen, near the “Place de l’Europe”, on the Kirchberg plateau, above the city of Luxembourg.

I. M. Pei visualize a museum that stands on the very rampart wall that surrounded the arrow shaped inner fortress.

The geometry of the museum is an extension and contrast to the fortress. Its shapes are both modern and classical.

Area: 113,000 gross sq.ft. (10,500sq. m)      31,200 sq. ft. (2,900 sq. m) of exhibition space on three levels; Ground level: reception, orientation, galleries, winter garden, & sculpture court. L-shaped assemblage between 6th–7th streets S. and 2nd–3rd avenues in the commercial district Minneapolis, Minnesota

Investment office building design for two major corporate tenants with individual identities; A 58-story tower, a 20-story building that defines a previously borderless park, and a corner winter garden focusing smaller-scale entrance that hinges the complex together. The mass is built up with six-story cube scaled building blocks, round towers unified by a common geometry, related materials, and a ground-level arcade. Plays a key role in Minneapolis’ skywalk system, and illuminated crown which, houses an antennae farm and communications network system.

1.9 million sq. ft. (176,515 sq.m) includes 328,000 sq.ft. parking & services, offices, retail and public spaces including a winter garden, skywalks; parking 3 levels below grade + 1 service level.

An irregularly shaped site at the intersection of Santa Monica and Wilshire boulevards, Beverly Hills, CA

The headquarters was designed for one of Hollywood’s most prominent literary and talent agencies at one of the busiest intersections in Los Angeles. Based on geometry of segmented circles, wrap around a central atrium, crowned by a cylindrical skylight. Creates an atrium through which everyone must pass on their way into and out of the building, high-visibility stairs, monumental entrance that puts interior activities on display, encourages personal interaction. Illuminated at night, it transforms the building into an urban lantern.

Area: 75,000 sq.ft., 44,500 sq.ft. of offices on 3 floors; 3,725 sq.ft. atrium, conference rooms, screening room, gourmet kitchen, roof terrace, concourse, 6,700 sq.ft underground parking 3 1/2 levels.

Dallas TX. A 3-acre site in the newly created Arts District along Flora & N. Pearl street, adjacent to the central business.

Meyerson Symphony Center is a world class concert hall, anchoring its emerging downtown Arts District. A 2,000-seat auditorium results from rigorous investigation into optimum capacity, ideal sight lines and acoustical excellence. Adjustable for: symphonic music, recitals, concert ensemble and solo performances to attain the perfected sound. The intricately glazed lobby and inclined skylights’ transparent by day and night, provides an inviting place for the public to congregate and engage the city.

Area: Gross - 485,000 sq. ft. (45,000 sq. m), concert hall 260,000 sq. ft., below grade - 225,000 sq. ft.                Performance hall, grand lobby, restaurant, prefunction spaces, musician’s wing, administration wing, outdoor sculpture garden, & underground parking.

New York, NY Occupying 5 city blocks, between 11th -12th Avenue/Hudson river & 34th – 39th streets, 21.9 acres.

The project’s full significance lies in its monumental public spaces (15 story Crystal Palace). The building was designed to house the largest exhibition under a single roof. 1,000 foot long public concourse Galleria organized access to the various exhibition spaces.

113 Peachtree Street, NE, John Wesley Dobbs Ave NE, Atlanta, Georgia

A new headquarters was proposed in 1978 to support their current and future expansion. The building’s shape was informed by the diagonal terminus of Peachtree Street in the city’s orthogonal grid, and the stepped geometry was introduced to give scale to the overall massing.

A new 16 story addition was proposed by Northwestern Mutual Life in 1975 to support their current and future expansion. The building was strategically place kiddy corner to their 1910 building so as to minimize obstruction of each buildings’ view and maximize the area of landscape to enhance the office environment. 

New skylight over the 1910 headquarter provide: a atrium, link to the addition with urban plaza & fountains.
